Starting off 2016 With New Work

My updates kind of fell off right when I started working as a full-time nanny for my youngest granddaughter in August of last year. I was also kept busy making hats and things, and I vended at a number of local crafts shows and boutiques in the fall, leading up to Christmas. I’m determined to get back on track this year with more up-to-date postings here. (My Facebook artist page is where I post the most frequent updates.)

If 6 Was 9

If 6 Was 9 (2015)

The First Friday show at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery (Ventura, California) came up fast on January 1. The show’s theme was Black and White Only. I created this 26.5″ x 22″ studio art quilt (If 6 Was 9) especially for the show. The title is one of Jimi Hendrix’s songs, in which he declares, “I’m gonna wave my freak flag high!”, enduring him to hippies past, present and future.

Friday, January 1 was also the deadline for submissions to the upcoming Ventura County Arts Council exhibit, Abstracts. I created this 21″ x 28″ studio art quilt (Streamers) and submitted the image for jurying.

I wish everyone a very Happy New Year in 2016! I have a feeling it’s going to be a productive year.

ArtWalk 2015 at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery in Ventura

ArtWalk weekend in Ventura has ended, and what a weekend it was! We had very rare and unseasonable thunderstorms and rain, and sweltering humid tropical heat. All in all, the venue at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery was beautiful, the music was wonderful, and everyone made the best of the weird weather. You can see all 62 photos I took in a Facebook photo album ArtWalk 2015 at Stoneworks.Gypsy Spirit Threadworks booth at ArtWalk 2015

Marmalade Skies for Mug Shot Portrait Show

This is my latest work, Marmalade Skies, created for the Mug Shot portrait art show at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, Ventura, California on First Friday, April 3, 2015. It is, at its very essence, a scrap quilt. I had a lot of fun putting it together. I finished it in the wee hours of April 1, and when I awoke, I found out that Cynthia Lennon had passed. Kind of cosmic. (I have a public photo album on Facebook, if you’d like to see the show.)

Yesterday afternoon I decided to make a new upcycled and altered dress to wear to the show. I made this in about an hour. Using a serger makes all the difference.

Shenanigans and Lucky Charms show

The First Friday show at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery last night was themed Shenanigans and Lucky Charms. I created a mixed media fiber piece, titled Bless Our Home. It is mounted on a painted 16 x 20″ canvas.

Brian Batchley and his Space Band played, and it was all around a fun and well attended show. Photo album may be seen here.

Holiday Shows 2014

I just realized that I have not updated Latest News for a while. Too long. Maybe my New Year’s resolution should be to update here more often! I got busy with making inventory, custom orders, doing a couple of local shows, spending time with family…the usual stuff. I hope your holiday season was a good one, and let’s hope that 2015 is prosperous and abundant for artists and crafters.

The following three photos were taken at the Bling Boutique in east Ventura at the Barranca Vista Center in November. It was a one day show, and I really enjoyed meeting the people who were involved as well as the customers.

Then one of my favorite shows, the Bizarre Bazaar at Green Art People in west Ventura was a weekend show in early December. Spaces are smaller there, so I didn’t bring all of my inventory. We had a lot of local holiday festivities on the same weekend, and consequently attendance was down from previous years. Still a fun time with friendly folks!

After the shows and custom orders were finished, I made gifts for family and friends. Some of them had to wait until slightly into January, but they didn’t mind.
