On First Friday, October 3rd, Michele Chapin and Guy Wilson hosted the annual Glow Show at Stoneworks Studios on the west end of Ventura, California. My friend Brian Batchley’s Space Band was playing on the outside stage, so I shot a video of the show with the band playing in the background. I felt inspired to attempt a trippy psychedelic video, and I think it turned out okay! We had some great entries. My Cosmic Glow Slug Hats are near the end. Enjoy!

Ventura ArtWalk, July 2014
I participated in the Ventura ArtWalk on July 19-20. Business was slow and we got some rare summer rain, but we had live music all weekend and everyone was nice and friendly, so it was fun nevertheless. Meeting new people and making new connections is always a plus for me. My booth was in the garden at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, which explains the big woodpile behind it!
January to June 2014
Now to continue my updating with the shows I’ve entered so far this year.(I also have Ventura ArtWalk coming up July 19-20, so I will be making and sharing new work soon.)
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, January 2, 2014. “Imagine That!” show. I entered How To Be An Artist, my SARK-inspired jacket and matching hat that I made several years ago, as well as a new crocheted hat shaped like a tiered cake (Crazy Cake Hat).
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, February 7, 2014. “Some Like It HOT!” show. I made a new freeform crochet garment titled Here Comes The Sun for the show.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, March 7, 2014. “March Into Spring” show. I entered my wearable art piece (Her Roots Go Down) that I created for the 2013 International Freeform Fiberarts Challenge. I had also entered it in the Ventura County Arts Council’s “Tactile” show in June and July 2013. Thanks to my friend Mark Tovar for taking the photos, because as I ran out the door that night, my camera’s rechargeable battery was dead.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, April 4, 2014. “Things That Fly” show. I made a new small wall hanging (10″ x 13″) titled Learning to Fly. It hangs from a twig I found in my yard, and it features a lot of hand embroidered quilting. The text states, “then she grew her wings and she learned to fly…”
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, May 2, 2014. “Heads Up!”, an exhibition of portraits. I created a new piece which is not fiber art. I wanted to experiment with drawing on inexpensive plates with permanent markers. This is Cosmic Friend.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, June 6, 2014. “The Alchemy of Elements” show. (Art inspired by Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and anything from the Periodic Table.) I created a freeform knit shawl (Air) and a freeform crocheted hood (Earth), with knit and crocheted leaves.
I hope you enjoyed my updates! Soon I’ll be sharing new items created for this summer’s ArtWalk in Ventura.
Getting Caught Up With 2013
Please excuse me while I dust the cobwebs off my site here…I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I updated Latest News. As they say, “life got in the way”. Oh, I was still making things and doing shows, it’s just that I got busy providing daycare for an infant grandchild, and then I got a temporary “paycheck job”. I kind of lost my posting mojo there for awhile. First I will get caught up with 2013, and my work so far in 2014 will be in the next post. Enjoy!
Ventura County Arts Council, “Artists Self-Portrait” exhibit, July – August 2013 in the atrium of the Hall of Administration, Ventura County Government Center. I entered my self-portrait studio quilt, What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been, and won an Honorable Mention, which was an honor considering how many entries were in the show.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, August 2, 2013. “Here Kitty Kitty” show. Peekaboo, mixed media fiber art on 16″ x 20″ canvas. It now hangs in my youngest granddaughter’s room.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, September 6, 2013. The “Splice” show; collaborative art by two or more artists. Owl & Pussy Cat, mixed media art installation by Sarah Jenks Flesher and Barbara Wunder Hynes. My contribution was the dangling seaweed, the hanging fishing nets, and the cat’s pillow.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, October 4, 2013. “The Glow Show” (all items had to glow in the dark). I wasn’t able to attend this show, but my friend Mark Tovar took this photo for me. I entered two crocheted glow in the dark mod “flip” wig hats (one is seen on a pedestal to the right).
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, November 1, 2013. The “Pint-Sized” show (all works 5 inches or under). I hand knit two miniature sweaters associated with well-known rock stars and mounted them on painted 4″ x 4″ canvases. Here is Cobain and Sting.
Stoneworks Studios and Gallery, December 6, 2013. “Holiday Hysteria” show. I crocheted two Christmas tree hats, complete with tiny ornaments and real mini-lights, powered by a small battery pack sewn inside.
In December 2013, I participated in the annual “Bizarre Bazaar” at Green Art People in Ventura. Here is a shot of my table. It was a weekend indoor show, so I didn’t set up my full booth. I love doing this show because everyone is so friendly and I always do very well.
That gets us caught up with last year. My next post will bring us up to speed on 2014!
The Elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water at Stoneworks
Last Friday I had two works in the First Friday show The Elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery in Ventura. I showed my freeform crochet garment Dreaming Atlantis, as well as a new piece, a studio art quilt titled Gaia Aura Hestia Yemaya, after goddesses representing the elements. To see a photo album of the entire show, go here.
