My Work in Two Recent Art Exhibits

On Friday evening, January 29, the Ventura County Arts Council held the reception for the art exhibit Abstracts, which is displayed on three levels in the Hall of Administration of the Ventura County Government Center in Ventura, California. They had an overwhelming response to the call for entries…254 entries by 62 artists. Accepted were 86 wall hung pieces and several 3D pieces, now on exhibit until March 1. My studio art quilt Streamers is displayed on the fourth floor.

On Friday evening, February 5, Stoneworks Studios and Gallery in Ventura, California hosted the art exhibit From The Bottom Of Your Art. I entered an older piece, because although I started a new work, life got in the way, and January ended up being a crazy busy month. This is Dancing In The Moonlight below, a mixed media studio art quilt.

Starting off 2016 With New Work

My updates kind of fell off right when I started working as a full-time nanny for my youngest granddaughter in August of last year. I was also kept busy making hats and things, and I vended at a number of local crafts shows and boutiques in the fall, leading up to Christmas. I’m determined to get back on track this year with more up-to-date postings here. (My Facebook artist page is where I post the most frequent updates.)

If 6 Was 9

If 6 Was 9 (2015)

The First Friday show at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery (Ventura, California) came up fast on January 1. The show’s theme was Black and White Only. I created this 26.5″ x 22″ studio art quilt (If 6 Was 9) especially for the show. The title is one of Jimi Hendrix’s songs, in which he declares, “I’m gonna wave my freak flag high!”, enduring him to hippies past, present and future.

Friday, January 1 was also the deadline for submissions to the upcoming Ventura County Arts Council exhibit, Abstracts. I created this 21″ x 28″ studio art quilt (Streamers) and submitted the image for jurying.

I wish everyone a very Happy New Year in 2016! I have a feeling it’s going to be a productive year.

ArtWalk 2015 at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery in Ventura

ArtWalk weekend in Ventura has ended, and what a weekend it was! We had very rare and unseasonable thunderstorms and rain, and sweltering humid tropical heat. All in all, the venue at Stoneworks Studios and Gallery was beautiful, the music was wonderful, and everyone made the best of the weird weather. You can see all 62 photos I took in a Facebook photo album ArtWalk 2015 at Stoneworks.Gypsy Spirit Threadworks booth at ArtWalk 2015

From T-Shirt to T-Skirt

AA tee shirt challenge 2015

The Altered Artwear group on Facebook had a recent t-shirt challenge, which means you take a t-shirt and change and alter it in some way. I was intrigued by this technique of turning a t-shirt into a skirt, so that is what I did…and I do like it!

I found this orange XL Old Navy shirt at the Goodwill for $1.00. I tied it up with rubber bands, and soaked it in water in a clean plastic black pail from the dollar store. (If your garment is thoroughly wet before dyeing, it will take the dye better.)

After the t-shirt was wet, I took it out of the pail. I then added a heaping half cup of table salt and a full bottle of Scarlet Rit dye with hot water in the pail, stirring to dissolve the salt. I then placed the rubber banded t-shirt into the dye solution for about an hour, stirring it occasionally. I then emptied the pail of the dye solution and placed the dyed t-shirt in the washing machine. I washed it in cold water with a little bit of laundry detergent while it was still tied up with the rubber bands. When the wash cycle was complete, I removed the rubber bands and hung the shirt up to dry.

The next step was cutting the waistband. I took this thrift store tie-dyed tee and cut off the bottom six inches after cutting off the hem. I cut the hem from the orange t-shirt, and I cut off the neckband. I then cut along the shoulder seams on each side, from the neck opening straight across to the edges of the sleeves. I did not cut off the sleeve hems, but you could. I then doubled over the waistband tube, wrong sides together, and serged it to the bottom edge of the orange t-shirt.

The waistband fits loose and comfortably, and I can always make a small slit on the inside at the seam and add a band of elastic. I like how it turned out, and I will be experimenting with this technique more in the future.

Altered Denim Challenge

Altered Denim Challenge collage text

I moderate the Altered Artwear group on Facebook, and recently we had an Altered Denim Challenge. I took a pair of size 8 child’s jean shorts and turned them into a small shoulder bag. I lined it with the purple cotton fabric from the dress I altered a little while back, and I made the straps from the cut off legs. The outer side of the flap features a batik of a scorpion, patched with other commercially batiked fabrics, which were outlined with hand embroidery. The inner side of the flap is lined with fabric I hand dyed several years ago. I added an inside pocket and magnetic snaps. The original front pockets are very handy for holding my keys, and the bag is just the right size for everyday use. It was a fun project that didn’t take that long to create.
